Watch My Thesis Grow!

I thought I'd have a little fun and post my thesis as I draft it. I couldn't find any other example of someone doing this and I thought it would be interesting to try. There should be a lot of changes over the next three or four weeks, so check back often! The draft is posted under the "Professional" tab and you are invited to post comments there.

I have really enjoyed reading your blog. I am applying for the MIT Sloan fellowship 2008-2009. I was wondering if you had any idea of the number of people that apply vs the number of people accepted. As I live in Europe, the time between knowing when you are accepten (feb-mar) to starting (june) seems incredibly short. Especially as there are a lot of things to organise if one is planning to move with a family. Kind reards, Michiel Lensink

I'm glad my blog has been helpful to you. I don't know the answer to your question, but do know that the number wouldn't be helpful. Since most of the applicants are sponsored by their corporations or governments, each one of their applications represents a pre-selection from many inside their own organization. As for the short window from acceptance to move, it's great preparation for the pace of the year to come! It is very fast but everything will be like that and, amazingly, everyone does manage to do it. The good news is that the school, the program, the current and former Fellows all help. At orientation, in April, they pass on information about neighborhoods, transportation, schools, etc. and introduce you to real estate agents, housing listings, and leave some time to find a place. Some Fellows sell their furniture and cars to the incoming class. It all works out!
